Jan discovered his passion for the saxophone at an early age. He was the winner of Germany’s national competition ‘Jugend Musiziert’ and won first prize in the International competition in Kerkrade.

He studied saxophone at the Universität der Künste in Berlin with Johannes Ernst, at the Conservatoire National de Lyon with Jean-Denis Michat and at the Sweelinck Konservatorium in Amsterdam with Arno Bornkamp. Under Friedemann Weigle, violist of the renowned Artemis string quartet, he learnt the finer points of the art of chamber music. He completed his studies at the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin, with distinction.

Jan was a prizewinner in the German music competition, Deutscher Musikwettbewerb, in 2003 and was awarded the ‘Cronenpreis’ from the Holsten Brewery Ag in the same year. He was awarded prizes at the International chamber music competition in Illzach, France (ADMC) and at the International Gaudeamus competition in Amsterdam. Jan and his saxophone quartet were awarded the Prize of the Friends of Jeunesses Musicales in 2008.

As soloist, he performs regularly with renowned orchestras, such as the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Beethovenhalle Bonn and the State Theatre Orchestra of Saarbrücken. Jan Schulte-Bunert has performed regularly with the Berliner Philharmoniker since 2002. He has performed concerts as soloist and with his saxophone quartet clair-obscur in Europe, Asia and the USA, including performances in Carnegie Hall in New York, the Konzerthaus on Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin, at the Ludwigsburger Schloss Festival, the Festival Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and in the Tonhalle in Düsseldorf. Jan Schulte-Bunert has recorded numerous CD productions and has been featured both as soloist and with his quartet on ‘portrait’ programmes broadcast by the North German Radio (NDR), German Radio (Deutschland Radio) and Hessischer Rundfunk (HR) among others.

Jan has recorded two CDs with pianist Florian von Radowitz and six CDs with his quartet, which have received critical acclaim. His latest solo album features the world premiere recording of Andrei Eshpai’s Concerto for soprano saxophone and orchestra, along with German premieres of John William’s “Escapades” und Michael Nyman’s “Where the bee dances”.

In addition, Jan Schulte-Bunert is a teacher at the International Masterclass for classical saxophone in Laubach and the International chamber music course of Jeunesses Musicales at the  Weikersheim castle in Germany. He has been invited to give masterclasses in the USA, Europe and Asia.

Jan Schulte-Bunert teaches classical saxophone at the Akademie für Tonkunst in Darmstadt and at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Rostock.
